The importance of spaying and neutering

Oh if I only had a penny for everytime I heard someone say ‘I want my kids to experience the miracle of birth so I’m not going to spay my pet’. Well folks, I could likely build that dream pet sanctuary of mine (note to self: start saving those pennies!). It is indeed a miracle to witness these births, but the beauty of this century is that we can go online and find a video of it! By keeping that aforementioned mentality, you’re planting a seed in the mind of your children that this is acceptable and I’m here to tell you… it simply needs to stop. Why? Ohhhh… do read on!

There are millions of animals being euthanized in shelters across our country every year… “How’s come?” (as my mother would say)… because people are not spaying and neutering their pets. Whatever the reason… custom, belief, the desire to watch a birth, cost or dare I say it so bluntly, just pure lack of knowledge (that’s my nice way of saying ‘ignorance’)… it all has to come to age…

Male pets often have far more serious behavioral issues if they are not neutered. Females experience far more health issues in the long run as well if they are allowed to reproduce. If you put your animals outside and they are ‘in tact’, they will do whatever they can to find that perfect ‘date’ shall we say… and in doing that, they expose themselves to all levels of harm, including but not limited to other animals attacking them and people trying to injure or even kill them. And then of course are all those unwanted births. Take it from someone like myself who has spent years trying to save and rescue many of these animals, it is a difficult position to be in as we are often not successful in our attempts. It’s heart breaking and sickening to watch these little lives cling to whatever they can for survival in a world that they don’t deserve to be in if they are not being loved and tended to in a good home. No life deserves that fate… no animal deserves death, just so you can see it be born.

Please think twice about purchasing a pet from a breeder. If you insist on it, make sure that you do extensive research on the breeder and don’t just go by word of mouth. And whatever you do… DO NOT trust the internet for buying a pet. You will often be supporting a mill. Instead, be wise and be kind and go to your local shelter and save a life… whether it’s a new born or a senior pet… SAVE A LIFE. And please, consider volunteering for local organizations who need help… you can be in the field helping or you can open your home to fostering animals in need. We can all learn to change and all learn that the goal should be: Spay and Neuter!!

  1. A friend of mine has a site that is devoted to informing the public about puppy mills. I viewed your site and appreciate what you are doing. Too many people don’t understand how such animal cruelty is going on now. Thanks for aiding the effort.
